 What are hair waves?

Different from naturally wavy hair which describes hair that falls in a wave like pattern, hair waves induced by a wave brush are more akin to waves in the ocean. Generally afro-style hair is required to achieve a true wavy appearance, however other hair types can accommodate waves by introducing perm and or heat treatment products. In order to form afro-centric hair into waves there are several steps which may include, but not limited to brushing, wax, and the wearing of a hair retention device (usually a du-rag) In addition to regular waves, there are also several styles of waves to include partitioned waves and 360-degree wave patterns. The most basic method of eliciting wave like patterns requires a bristled brush and a blow drier on medium heat. Once again it is important to denote the difference between hair waves, and someone whose hair is naturally wavy. In modern day wavy hair is considered a fashionable hair style and is oftentimes maintained at night by wearing some sort of cap over the scalp.

How to achieve waves

It is recommended you begin with the introduction of hair wax in order to ease the process and reduce heat damage from the blow drier. With one hand you should brush downwards towards the front of your scalp in a diagonal pattern. With the other hand ensure to maintain constant heat from the blow drier on the areas which you are passing the brush over. If you desire you wave pattern to span a 360-degree pattern, simply repeat this process in a circular pattern throughout your scalp, ensuring even wave patterns throughout. Course hair also known as afro-centric hair types will typically see results faster than others with more textured hair. Daily maintenance and brushing should illicit a patterned wave look in approximately 30 days in someone with course hair. The same process is used regardless of the hair type, however more textured hair could take up to 90 days to achieve similar results. In addition to daily brushing, it is crucial to not wash the hair too often so as to disrupt rooted wave patterns and essentially can remove the wave pattern completely.

There are some cool Youtube videos of people documenting their weekly process with their waves:

Alternative methods of achieving waves (Hair Wolfing)

There are many methods to achieve wavy hair, and one of the most popular includes introducing some sort of fabric and hair moisturizer. A wet wash cloth could suffice so long as it’s lightly moist and used to brush downwards on the scalp in a similar pattern to hair brush. A du-rag is a piece of cloth with tie downs which permit the wearer to retain the fabric snug against the scalp during sleeping hours. This alone can induce a wavy pattern as the fabric presses down on the individual hair follicles and forms a wave like pattern. Brushing is still recommended regardless of the method of attenuation as this will result in neater more organized waves. Incorporating these multiple processes is known as hair wolfing. Hair wolfing isn’t necessary to achieve waves but can help ensure deeper and more defined/connected waves.
